Cynicism

Watching E.T. earlier today, it occurred to me that I have more trouble believing federal agents would be as kind as Peter Coyote’s character if E.T. actually came to earth than I have trouble believing E.T. would come to earth in the first place.

  1. Was that the new “enhanced” E.T. or the original? If the new one, what did you think of the new scenes?

  2. It was the original - the feds still had guns. I’d have been even MORE bitingly cynical if this had been the gun-free remake, since unarmed feds are an even further stretch of credibility than the armed-yet-friendly feds from the original.

  3. Yeah, well. A cynic is what an idealist calls a realist.

On the other hand, we have less today to fear from everything-else-besides-government than ever before. Is that cynical?

I don’t think you (and I) are really as cynical as we sometimes appear.
